CHAMPIONS Volunteer Training

  • Screening

Volunteers, including nurses, medical students, pre-medical students, and community members, are trained in community-based cardiovascular risk screening procedures to screen for hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and peripheral artery disease (PAD). Most often physician volunteers discuss cardiovascular risk in the Education portion of the screening based on assessment and past medical health history.

  • Equity

An essential part of our program is training volunteers through a health equity lens. This involves learning to communicate effectively about cardiovascular risk factors, self-care strategies, and available health services—tailored to the unique needs of each community. Training is carried out in collaboration with community-based nonprofits and local health service providers, ensuring both cultural relevance and real-world impact.

  • Internships

We offer hands-on fellowships for medical students focused on innovative course and curriculum development. These programs also provide unique training experiences in public outreach and care for underrepresented communities, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between academic institutions and community health providers to create meaningful impact—both in the classroom and beyond.
